Caretaker and Friend

Rob isn't who most people would think of as your typical caretaker for those in our community with special needs. He's in a moped gang. He smokes. He drinks. Yet none of these things take away from his devotion to his job — working with Fakih, who is autistic. Every day during the week, Rob helps Fakih learn how to make sense of his life and how to eventually become independent enough to take care of himself. It's been a pleasure working with Rob and Fakih. I'm always really appreciative of those who let me into their lives — it's what makes this profession so great.

These pictures are beautiful, August. They made me smile. I love the simple symbols you have with Fakih and the facial expressions you captured. Nice job!

Hey a fundamentals student did a story on this guy last semester! Interesting to see a different perspective of the same person. How long has he been a caretaker?

Thanks Katie!

Vivian, he told me about that student. He said she never showed him anything she shot, and apparently seemed completely bored when she was doing the story. I'd be interested to see it though. He's been a caretaker for Fakih for two years, and for other people for a few years prior to that.
